The Movie Critic – Quentin Tarantino reveals new details about his latest film

The last film in his directorial career Quentin Tarantino bears the title The Movie Critic. Some time ago we learned that the script for this title is ready, and the pre-production stage is underway, i.e. preparations for work on the set, which is to start in autumn 2023.

We only learned then that the story is to be set in the 1970s in Los Angeles and is to focus on a woman, the titular film critic. It was speculated that the heroine could be Pauline Kael, who is considered one of the most influential film critics in history. Now, however, the master of film postmodernism revealed a bit more information in an interview with Deadline.

Tarantino admitted that his film would actually be about a film critic from the 1970s, but emphasized that it would not be Pauline Kael from The New Yorker. Instead, it will be based on a man who really existed but wasn’t famous and was writing movie reviews for a magazine…porn. The director recalls operating vending machines with porn magazines as a teenager. They were too disgusting to read, but there was one rag that had a really interesting page dedicated to movies. However, he did not want to reveal the title of the magazine, but in Tarantino’s film it will be called The Popstar Pages.

He wrote about mainstream films and was a background critic. I think he was a very good critic. He was cynical as hell. His reviews were a cross between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle could be [postać Roberta DeNiro w Taksówkarzu]if he were a film critic.

Tarantino adds that the critic liked to write harshly, use insults (even racist), but his lyrics were really funny. “He was rude as hell,” recalls the director. He also adds that he wrote like a 55-year-old, although he only lived to be in his thirties. Tarantino conducted research on the subject and found that alcohol abuse was probably the cause of death.

We also learn that at the moment no one has been cast in this role. He only added that it would be someone aged 35 and an actor he had never worked with before. He has a type, but he doesn’t want to reveal anything at this point. He emphasizes that it will be a person born in the United States.
