Oppenheimer – real scientists on the set. “Here we must be faithful to history”

Oppenheimer is a historical drama that tells the story of theoretical physicist J.Robert Oppenheimer, the Manhattan Project and the creation of the atomic bomb.
In addition to stars such as Cillian Murphy playing the lead role, Roberta Downey Jr. or Emily Blunt the director Christopher Nolan made sure that real scientists appeared in some scenes to preserve the authenticity of the film.
“We were in the real Los Alamos and we had a lot of real scientists as extras,” Nolan said. “We needed a lot of extras to react and improvise, and we got something like impromptu, very smart speeches. It was really nice to hear it.”
Nolan also added: “{…} These guys thought about the geopolitical implications of nuclear weapons, and they knew a lot about it. In fact, it was a great reminder every day that we have to really be true to history and know what we’re doing.”
Oppenheimer – Murphy and preparations for the main role
While Nolan brought scientists to the set, Cillian Murphy was not overly interested in the science behind the creation of the atomic bomb and preferred to focus on getting to know Oppenheimer’s character thoroughly.
“{…} an awful lot of reading,” Murphy said of his preparation for the role. “I am interested in man and what {the invention of the atomic bomb} does to the individual. The mechanics of it aren’t for me – I don’t have the intellectual capacity to understand it, but these conflicting characters are fascinating. “
Oppenheimer is scheduled to hit theaters on July 21, 2023.
