Series New Amsterdam was based on a book called Twelve patientsin which Dr Eric Manheimer he was just describing his experience of being the director of the Bellevue Hospital in New York, which operates exactly like the one in the series. Prior to shooting, the doctor met with Ryan Eggold, who plays his alternate version in production and introduced him to this medical world. As the actor himself admits in an interview with the monthly Pani, he learned a lot from Erick. Which was a big surprise for him.
He taught me even more empathy for patients. Which was surprising to me because I come from a medical family. My parents are doctors, my sister is a nurse, so I should have it all in my little finger. Yet Erick was able to deepen my knowledge. One of the things I took from him is that Max is constantly on the move. If you pay attention to it, we very rarely show him in a sitting position. He goes to the hospital all the time. Even when he talks, he walks the corridors at the same time. He’s everywhere, and that’s because Erick is just that kind of person. Even on a movie set.
