In a corset – what is a movie?
Empress Sisi is one of Vienna’s top tourist attractions, her face appears on countless memorabilia, and the classic film trilogy starring Roma Schneider is shown on Austrian television every Christmas. Her image, however, is frozen in time, director Marie Kreutzer reaches for a different moment in the life of a well-known character – she shows Elizabeth when she turns 40 and begins to be perceived through the prism of her age, not achievements or aspirations. Sisi wants to avoid being forced into a rigid corset of expectations, while also wanting to protect her legacy.
IO – plot description
The story of ourselves, reflected in the moist eyes of a donkey, delighted with its artistic bravado and youthful energy, although it is named after the 84-year-old master of European cinema. The story of IO, thanks to an extraordinary animal character, goes beyond the human perspective, but above all it is a deeply humanistic film – a manifesto in defense of what remains innocent in us. The journey that Skolimowski takes us on leads across Europe: from the circus, through stadiums and parking lots for trucks, to palaces. From stupidity, through violence, to flashes of goodness and solidarity. This group portrait, which nevertheless does not lose sight of a single ant, combines the realistic and the visionary, the mundane and the metaphysical, the critical and the empathetic. Its scale resembles the greatest paintings by Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel.
Masquerade – description of the film
He – a breaker of women’s hearts, she – a born seducer. One summer evening, they meet at one of the lavish parties on the French Riviera and start a passionate romance. From the very first moments, however, it is known that love is not enough for them to live happily ever after. Adrien and Margot want more. They dream of obscenely large amounts of money. Fantasizing about a future together, they come up with a perfect and perfidious scam plan that will change the lives of the rich inhabitants of the Côte d’Azur.
Sundown – plot description
Alice (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and Neil (Tim Roth) spend their holidays in a famous Mexican resort. The luxurious idyll is interrupted by an unexpected phone call that forces them to change their plans, and Neil is tempted to completely change his life. Set between luxury and poverty, privilege and lack of it, the fullness of life and its sunset, “Sundown” poses the most important questions about what really makes us happy. Money? Love? ties? Or maybe the lack of them?
