Wonderworkers (Miracle Workers IV) – In a post-apocalyptic future, a wasteland warrior and ruthless warlord face the most dystopian nightmare of all: life in the suburbs. Good luck, Balthazar! (Au Hasard Balthazar) – Balthazar is a donkey, passed from owner to owner. Some of them are friendly, others are cruel. However, the animal is unable to understand the motivation from any of these individuals. Balthazar, whose life resembles that of his first protector, Marie, suffers for the sins of humanity. Although he is powerless, he humbly accepts his fate. Thanks to director Robert Bresson’s unconventional approach to composition, sound and narration, this simple story becomes a moving parable of purity and transcendence.
her dear (Her Way) – Marie (Laure Calamy) is a single mother who works as a prostitute in Strasbourg. Independent in her private life and professional in her profession, the woman is an active member of her community who campaigns for increased police protection for herself and her colleagues. Adrien, her apathetic and pessimistic 17-year-old son, has just been kicked out of school and is considering a career in the armed forces. Hope is not lost because the boy has a great talent for cooking. Marie, with the help of her friends, prepares him for the entrance exam to a prestigious culinary school, which is ready to turn a blind eye to his poor grades. However, the tuition exceeds her financial means, which prompts Marie to take up a dangerous activity.
Silverstar – 16-year-old Esmee is crazy about horses. However, her grandmother, who looks after her, is completely against horse riding. Esmee finds the young horse Silverstar as he escapes a fire at the stables and develops an unusual bond with him. After a fire at the stables, an offer of help comes from a horse trader. But the question is, can you trust her? What are his plans for Silverstar, the famous show jumper named Whitestar? Esmee discovers something disturbing, but no one wants to listen to her. The desperate girl finally comes to the conclusion that the only chance to save Silverstar is to escape.
Great freedom (Great Freedom) – Hans Hoffmann (Franz Rogowski) doesn’t expect much from life in post-war West Germany. He can’t because the government considers it a crime to be gay. Despite the odds, Hans has no intention of giving up the power of love. A subtle, romantic and brilliantly acted drama set in a brutal prison environment, it shows that even the darkest cell cannot take away a man’s freedom.
mouchette – Teenage Mouchette does not have an easy life. Her mother is dying, her father is an abusive alcoholic, and her younger brother needs her constant care. A girl seeks a respite from the problems of everyday life in the French countryside. One day, fleeing from a storm, Mouchette meets Arsène, a violent poacher. The man lets her take refuge in his cabin, but then attacks her and tries to involve her in covering up his crime. A great work of French cinematography and, at the same time, an extremely empathetic drama by Robert Bresson.
Broker (The Middle Man) – Frank was unemployed for a long time. In the end, however, fortune smiles on him and he is hired as an intermediary. It is a prominent, if quite difficult, job. In a city that is inexplicably plagued by accidents and disasters, Frank’s main duty is to inform people about the death of their loved ones. Almost immediately, the man befriends Brenda, the receptionist at City Hall. However, she must face her enraged ex, Bob, who is also Frank’s longtime enemy and job rival. Bob’s rage at being left out will have dire consequences and will reveal long-buried secrets
Petya, my Petya (Petya Of My Petya) – Saddened by injustice at school and betrayed by her loved ones, 17-year-old Petya commits suicide. It is about the talented poet Petya Dubarova, who in 1979 took her own life. The situation repeats itself in 2019 and concerns an ordinary girl, also named Petya. Times change, people change too, only the system that does not tolerate differences remains the same.
Pirates next door: The ninja from the other side (Ninjas Down the Street) – In the seaside town of Sandsborough, the Blunderbuss pirate family has fully integrated into the community. One day, however, their lives are turned upside down when the ninjas move into a nearby house. It’s common knowledge that pirates and ninjas are sworn enemies. While pirate captain Hector tries his best to get rid of his new neighbors, his son Billy and ninja daughter Yuka grow closer. The pirates decide to challenge the ninjas and have a final battle with them. Who will win? Ninjas are faster and more flexible, but pirates are the best crooks in the world…
Too Close to the Sun – After being released from the hospital, thirty-something Basile moves in with Sarah, his younger sister and closest confidante. A boy who struggles with mental disorders tries his best to find a sense of stability both at work and in his love life. However, he hides his illness from his new relatives, and it is not known how long he will be able to maintain this fragile stability?
Money (L’argent) – A moving morality play masterfully directed by Robert Bresson. A story about a random man whose life turns into a nightmare because of a fake banknote. Martial (Bruno Lapeyre) and Norbert (Marc Ernest Fourneau) are young crooks who pay in stores with counterfeit money. Their victim is Yvon (Christian Patey), an unsuspecting courier who ends up with a counterfeit banknote. When the man tries to spend the money, he gets into trouble. He is arrested for attempted fraud. In the meantime, he loses his job, his child dies, and his wife leaves. Broken and desperate, he begins to take out his anger and grief on others. The moving film directed by the great Robert Bresson (Escape of the Convict, Pickpocket, The Trial of Joan of Arc) is a contemporary morality play and refers to Leo Tolstoy’s story “The Counterfeit Banknote”. It shows a man in a no-win situation – defenseless and put to the test by fate. It says that human life is governed by chance and is full
