Buffy the Vampire Slayer – James Marsters would kill Spike. The writers had no idea for the character
James Marsters in the popular series Buffy: The Vampire Slayer played Spike. His character was initially supposed to appear only in a few episodes and die, but the actor’s charisma won the fans’ sympathy so much that the idea was withdrawn. Thus, Spike kept returning in subsequent seasons. However, as the actor himself admits, this could be a mistake.
James Marsters told RadioTimes that the writers never really knew what to do with his character.
James Marsters would kill Spike if he could
The actor continued, explaining how Spike has changed over the years. He revealed how he would play his plot himself.
I was a villain. Then I became a crazy neighbor and then a bad boyfriend. Then a fallen man trying to find redemption. And finally, an experimental hero.
As soon as the audience started to like him too much – oh we want him, we love the character, let him bond with Buffy – I’d kill him. Probably after about three episodes. He ruined everything. I’m lucky that the creators had more courage and imagination than I did in their place.

Why do developers change plans? Sometimes the characters are very much liked by the fans and you can’t get rid of them, and sometimes – as in Aliens – the original ending was too dark. See which well-known and loved characters were supposed to die much earlier than in the final version: Nebula and Happy Hogan from the MCU, Klaus from The Vampire Diaries and not only.
