Bruce Almighty was a success. The comedy garnered good reviews and grossed $484.5 million worldwide against a budget of $85 million. So it’s no surprise that they wanted to make a sequel with Jim Carrey, which unfortunately never saw the light of day, and trying to keep the series alive with a movie Evan Almighty turned out to be a spectacular flop. The film grossed $174 million worldwide on a budget of $175 million.
Bruce Almighty 2 – what’s the movie about?
Steven Koren and Mark O’Keefe, co-writers of the first part, told SyFy Wire that they had an idea for Bruce’s further adventures. On one occasion they ran into producer Michael Bostick and introduced him. It had a title brucifier and Bruce was supposed to get Satan’s powers in it.
It turns out that Jim Carrey loved the idea and wanted to do it. According to the writers, the producers never felt it. He’s implying the issue was the momentum, because it would be a great movie, and they didn’t want to do that at that point. However, considering making Evan Almighty on twice the budget of the first part, it’s not a surprise given its flop. brucifier was introduced to them in 2010, three years after the release of the loss-making film.
Bruce in the movie was about to lose his wife Grace played by Jennifer Aniston. The screenwriter explains that people often lose faith in such situations. They point out that although the starting point is serious, they did not want to write it in a depressing way in the script. They believe that this theme scared the producers a bit, because in their eyes it was not as comedic as in the first part. The screenwriters, however, point out that Jim Carrey perfectly understood their intentions and knew how to use it well, both comedy and emotionally.
So Bruce had to use Satan’s power to resurrect Grace. The idea came up in a conversation with Carrey that then she would first look a bit like a zombie, and then regain her appearance.
So the Brucifier remains a curiosity that will never be realized.
