Asteroid City – first opinions. Wes Anderson’s film is delightful, but not without its flaws

Asteroid City is a comedy directed by Wes Anderson. The action takes place in 1955 against the backdrop of a fictional desert city in the United States. Students and parents embark on a journey to meet at Junior Stargazer – a camp aimed at space enthusiasts. Their plans are thwarted by changing world events. The cast included Steve Carell, Margot Robbie, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan CranstonTilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe and Tom Hanks.
The film was screened at the 76th Cannes International Film Festival. Among the journalists, positive opinions prevail – they mainly praise the style and set design. David Ehrlich z IndieWire considers it one of his best films. It’s a cosmic, dreamy and insidiously moving comedy about sadness. Matt Neglia z NextBestPicture also shares Ehrlich’s view of Anderson’s best film. In addition, it praises established characters connected by a “heavenly event” who question their place in the universe as they seek truth in art.
In turn, Therese Lacson from the site collider indicates that Asteroid City is characterized by an unconventional approach to narration, which adds panache to the film. He points out that it has flaws that make the story feel incomplete. She added that it’s a standard Wes Anderson film that doesn’t hit as emotionally as his other hits, but it has its own charm.
Channel Youtuber The Oscar Expert thinks Asteroid City is surprisingly weak. He admitted that the film can be funny and has a stunning set design, but it is strangely intricate. He did not like this meta-narrative, and the low level of drama wears off towards the end of the show. He called the movie a dud.
